My post for the day is more of an observation. Growing up, I heard Jonah’s story many times; disobeying God’s calling is a recipe for disaster, there was a large carnivorous whale or giant fish, and repent or die. I don’t know if it was the fault of my pastors or just my own brain, but I recently reread Jonah and realized I had latched on to the wrong part of the story; his book isn’t about his act of disobedience or the size/species of the sea animal, or the necessity of repentance; his story was about the reasons behind the decisions made. Jonah’s task was to spread the gospel of repentance and hope to the people of Nineveh. Jonah risked the wrath of God because he had decided that the people of Nineveh did not deserve the grace that God was offering. God offers His grace to all and it isn’t our decision to decide who is worthy of His love. We love because He first loved us and He loved us enough to die for us while we were still enemies.
