It’s Possible They’re Angels

Hebrews 13:1-3 “Let brotherly love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body.”

Something has gone terribly wrong in the US. The rhetoric used by those in favor of mass deportation has swiftly gone from, “illegal aliens” to “illegal immigrants” to “illegals” to “immigrants”. The humanity of a person has been lost by those who proclaim “pro-life”. With the dehumanization of the immigrant, we have opened a gate that should have been closed at the conclusion of WW2. The line between what makes an immigrant legal or not legal, has blurred and bent very near to the point of breaking. People try to argue for due process and “innocent until proven guilty” but shut down because “that’s only for citizens”. How can we know who is a citizen or who is here as a legal resident or who is not approved to be here, if we don’t take the time to prove it. There are no reports of warrants being used, but there are reports of citizens being detained with the threat of deportation. I was going to say that I am concerned that we may soon see a US version of the Jewish stars from Nazi Germany, but suddenly realized that those aren’t needed if the government is going off of racial features.

Please, if you profess to be a Christian, remember that we are to see all people as people and we are to love as Christ loves us. And remember, if following your government’s laws causes you to break God’s laws, you are not required to follow them. You should not follow them.

Acts 5:27-29 And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest questioned them, saying, “We strictly charged you not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.” But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.”

I Peter 3:8-17

Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing. 10 For

“Whoever desires to love life
    and see good days,
let him keep his tongue from evil
    and his lips from speaking deceit;
11 let him turn away from evil and do good;
    let him seek peace and pursue it.
12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,
    and his ears are open to their prayer.
But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

13 Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good? 14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, 15 but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, 16 having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. 17 For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God’s will, than for doing evil.

Matthew 5:43-48 You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers,[i] what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

  1. Thanks Spencer! I like your dare to discuss approach. What do you think is the starting point for Christians as we seek to love our neighbors (even those who have immigrated illegally) and submit to the government (recognizing we resist when compelled to disobey God)?

    • Thanks for commenting! I think the first step is for us to remember that all of us are created in God’s image and that Jesus died for all of us, “while we were still sinners.” All people should be seen through a lens of love and compassion, knowing that they need Jesus as much as we do. When a label like illegal is used to define people it makes it easier to forget their humanity. Not all undocumented migrants are here with malevolent intentions or with intentions to abuse “the system”. We should support systems that are willing to take the time to seek out and help the used, abused, and abandoned.
